About Webometrics

A Global Perspective on Higher Education in the Digital Age

WEBOMETRICS is a global higher-education ranking platform that evaluates the digital presence and academic web influence of higher education institutions worldwide.

Through a multidimensional framework built around Impact, Openness and Excellence, WEBOMETRICS provides students, researchers, institutions, policymakers and the public with a comparative perspective on how higher education participates in, contributes to and is recognized across the global digital environment.

Why Digital Presence Matters

Higher education increasingly operates within a global digital ecosystem.

Institutional websites, academic repositories, scholarly publications, open educational resources, search environments, social platforms, digital services and other public web resources have become important channels through which institutions share knowledge and connect with students, researchers and society.

WEBOMETRICS examines this broader digital environment to provide a complementary perspective on higher education performance.

The ranking does not attempt to replace traditional academic evaluation. Instead, it adds a digital dimension by examining how institutional knowledge, research and public resources are represented, accessible and recognized across the web.

Our Methodology: A Data-Driven Approach

WEBOMETRICS evaluates the digital presence and academic web influence of higher education institutions through three main indicators:

Impact: Web visibility, search presence, external authority, digital reach, social influence, online reputation and global engagement.

Openness: Open institutional and academic content, accessibility, discoverability, public digital resources and inclusive access to knowledge.

Excellence: Research excellence, scholarly influence, website quality, technical performance, reliability, security and the overall quality of the Institution's digital presence.

Our Purpose

WEBOMETRICS exists to make the digital dimension of higher education easier to understand and compare.

Our purpose is to provide an accessible global ranking framework that recognizes the increasingly important role of digital visibility, open knowledge, scholarly influence and high-quality institutional web environments.

The platform is designed to support informed exploration and comparison while recognizing that no single ranking can capture every aspect of an Institution's quality, mission or contribution to society.

Our Commitment to Transparency and Integrity

WEBOMETRICS is designed around consistent measurement, data quality and methodological integrity.

The public methodology explains the principal dimensions being evaluated and the general categories of information that contribute to the ranking. Certain operational details—including internal thresholds, detailed signal transformations, provider configurations and anti-manipulation mechanisms—are not publicly disclosed where doing so could undermine ranking integrity.

Commercial relationships, advertising and access to analytical products do not directly purchase or guarantee a higher WEBOMETRICS ranking position.

Data that appears artificial, duplicated, manipulated, incorrectly attributed or otherwise unreliable may be excluded or discounted in accordance with the applicable methodology.

Continuous Development

The World Wide Web and the way institutions communicate knowledge continue to evolve.

WEBOMETRICS therefore reviews its methodology, data sources and measurement framework over time. New forms of digital publishing, research communication, accessibility and institutional presence may be incorporated when they provide sufficiently reliable and comparable information.

Material methodological changes may be reflected in future ranking editions and methodology updates.

Project Independence

WEBOMETRICS is independently developed and operated by UNIRANKS.

The current WEBOMETRICS project is institutionally independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, operated by, or the organizational or legal successor of the Cybermetrics Lab, CSIC, webometrics.info, or the Ranking Web of Universities.

Understanding the Rankings

WEBOMETRICS rankings are comparative informational assessments based on the methodology applicable to each published ranking edition.

A WEBOMETRICS ranking does not constitute accreditation, governmental recognition, certification or a comprehensive judgment of an Institution's overall educational quality.

Ranking results should therefore be considered alongside other academic, institutional and contextual information.
