Objectives

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities aims to recognize and promote the digital transformation of higher education institutions by evaluating how effectively they reflect their academic, research, and societal contributions online.

Our main goal is to foster the open dissemination of knowledge by encouraging universities to expand the volume, accessibility, and credibility of their digital content. This includes both formal outputs such as peer-reviewed publications and open-access repositories, and informal contributions like blogs, data sets, and public outreach activities.

Rather than focusing solely on traditional research metrics, Webometrics provides a comprehensive view of institutional performance through indicators that measure global visibility, online impact, and digital engagement.

Through our methodology, we aim to:

  • Encourage institutions to strengthen their online presence
  • Support open access and knowledge equity for global audiences
  • Reflect not only academic research but also education, outreach, and innovation
  • Highlight opportunities for institutions to improve their digital strategy

A strong and well-maintained web presence serves as a mirror of an institution’s transparency, academic vitality, and relevance in the global knowledge ecosystem.

While the Webometrics Ranking offers meaningful insights, we advise students and stakeholders to use it alongside additional academic and contextual criteria when evaluating universities.
